Dunga Run — cheap cars, epic roads, big hearts

Dunga Run key facts

The Dunga Run is a New Zealand charity road rally run by the TimeOut Charitable Trust. Teams buy a cheap car (a "dunga") for $2,000 or less and drive 2,600km of remote North Island roads.

  • Dates: 21–28 November 2026 (7 days, 7 nights).
  • Start: Orewa Beach Holiday Park, Orewa, Auckland. Finish: Turners Cars, Otahuhu, Auckland.
  • Entry: apply as a team of two, buy a road-legal dunga for $2,000 or less, pay the team registration fee, budget about $195 per team per day for camping and meals, carry a radio telephone and fundraise for TimeOut. 20 team places.
  • Donate: donate to the event or to a team from the team directory; businesses can sponsor a team.
  • TimeOut Charitable Trust: a New Zealand charity giving families living with incurable illness free holiday-home breaks.

  • Dunga Doers — driving for We’re the support crew behind the Dunga Run, making sure everything keeps rolling! Ronda founded TimeOut Charitable Trust, David is her husband and has supported her and TimeOut behind the scenes for years, and Roimata is a founding TimeOut board member. Between us, we’ll be looking after registration, check ins, camp logistics, cooking, catering and welcoming everyone in at the end of each leg. We’re all volunteering because we love Dunga Run, believe it’s a fantastic fit for TimeOut and want to help make it a success. We’re looking forward to the adventure, meeting an awesome bunch of people, having plenty of laughs and, most importantly, making a real difference for TimeOut and the families we support. We can’t wait to Dunga with you!
  • Still Running — driving for We're rallying for TimeOut Charity, so Kiwi families facing terminal illness can escape to a beautiful holiday home, breathe, and make precious memories together.
  • Pasta La Vista — driving for Raise funds so many many “of the Familia” can have a week away at a critical time and experience some great time together
  • Remuera Tractor — driving for I've seen what a TimeOut stay does for a family. I want more families to get one.
  • The Blondini Gang — driving for So that people facing the hardest possible challenge can unplug from the world and take a breath, often when it's needed most.
  • Dunga Bush Doctors — driving for If your car breaks down, these two will give it everything they’ve got to fix it. If it can be mended outside of a garage with minimal tools and equipment, they’re the ones to do it!
  • Cavallo Vecchio — driving for In memory of Dad who gave us a masterclass in making the most of every moment. Our old-horse Alfa refuses retirement and will be rattling along for TimeOut to help families make every moment count.
  • Number 8 Wire Brigade — driving for We jumped at the opportunity to support this super worthwhile cause and help raise funds for Time Out, because while some people do amazing things, on the flip side, some people really do it tough.
  • The Remarkable Rattler — driving for We're driving to support Doug and the incredible TimeOut team, helping families facing terminal illness create their own remarkable, lasting memories together
  • Reel Mates — driving for We have experience of family members going through the struggles of life and know the rewards of being able to get away and relax and spend some Timeout. A wonderful charity and worthy cause.
  • Dunga Dynasty — driving for After his Mum was diagnosed with terminal cancer, Hunter and his family had the opportunity to spend time away together thanks to the generosity of a family friend. That experience led to his Mum founding TimeOut Charity
  • The Slow and Curious — driving for Ronda is a very dear friend who has created an amazing space for families to have time together at a very difficult time. We would love to help such an incredible women and cause.
  • The Dung Beetle — driving for Raise as much awareness as we can for TimeOut and in the process raise money for Kiwi families doing it tough
  • The Reigniters — driving for We're driving for TimeOut Charity, so other Kiwi families facing terminal illness can escape to a beautiful location, connect and create precious time and memories together.
  • The Brass Holes — driving for Cars break down, and we can fix those, but what some families are facing is much bigger. We’re driving to help TimeOut give families precious time together
  • Czech Mate — driving for Myself and Adam run a HVAC Business called Encom. We have a Skoda Octavia which belonged to Adam's late father from new which we would love to do a road trip in. The Dunga run looks like a lot of fun and for a good cause.
